The Story behind the Portrait

This is a life-size portrait of Henry Morrison Flagler standing in his library at Whitehall in Palm Beach, Florida. Flagler used the library as a reception area to greet guests and meet with business associates.

This painting is multi-portrait, showing the sculptors and items in the library that he collected. Garafola's portrait is also a historical painting as it shows Flagler holding the first Florida East Coast Railway Company million dollar bond issued to J.P. Morgan & Co. on June 23, 1909. It is a first mortgage, fifty year gold bond at 4.5% interest that was due in June 1959. This was the first in a series of one million dollar bonds. This bond was signed by the secretary and vice president of the company. On Flagler's face is a look of satisfaction.
